On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, close to a hundred or even more people meet in Vienna’s fifth district in the project bearing association’s premises to speak to each other in a certain language, to practice it and to get to know other people. There is no entrance fee, no advance reservation. Each and every one can be in charge of a table at the language café in her or his native language. He or she best notifies the café organisers beforehand, and then simply puts a table card with the respective language onto a free table. Whoever feels like sits down at that table and speaks Italian, Polish, German, Turkish, French, Kurdish, you name it from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Of late, German tables have been in high demand.

Space for meeting through language was to be created; space for Viennese since birth and for new-comer Viennese, no matter from what social background, whether old or young, woman or man; without any pressure to consume, and of easy access. Realisation has more than succeeded. The language café is an open space which at the same time provides a comfortingly secure framework. It is meant for practicing a language and for getting to know people who were hitherto strangers. It is a part of Vienna that shows how diverse Vienna is, not only in terms of languages. So simple, so successful, so innovative! Let us hope that soon there will be more such spaces. It is far more than the German language that is at stake.
