Miről szól a projekt?

The European year for combating poverty and social exclusion saw the creation of the journalism prize “From Below”. Activists with or without poverty experience and journalists designed it together. In 2014, it was awarded for the fifth time, the categories being print media, online media, radio and television. A total of 152 contributions have so far been awarded prizes, with a majority coming from women. The jury is exclusively made up of people with poverty experience. It selects those journalistic works which prove respectful vis-à-vis the poor and the reality that they live and which analyse the societal causes of poverty. Since 2014, a “Guide for Respectful Poverty Reporting” helps with this.

Not “professional experts” but “experts by experience” – who themselves have to live in or with poverty – make up the jury of the journalism prize “From Below”. They do not play the role of “passive victims”, medially stigmatised or pitied, depending on which cliché the context requires. They rather judge, as sovereigns, the quality of submitted media reports about their experiences with poverty and the various paths that took them there; and about what poverty has to do with all of us. An innovative change of perspective. Because poverty exists – even if we do not like to look at it. And the way we look at the poor is changeable, for example by good journalism. Maybe this kind of award will soon be exported…
