People with learning disabilities organise and campaign for their rights – vis-à-vis the public and vis-à-vis political deciders. Once a year, a so-called "self-representation weekend" is held. The network is governed by a nucleus group of self-representing concerned from Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg and Vienna. People without learning disabilities are associated for support. In Tyrol and Vorarlberg there are independent peer-counselling centres. The network participates in Social Affairs and Justice Ministry working groups, and the Social Affairs Ministry partly finances it. An important aim is the extension of the network to all of Austria.

To understand one's rights is not a matter of course! The Self Representation Network wants, for example, to establish the right to relevant legal texts in easy language. The network members and their successes speak for themselves. They have accomplished a long journey from well-meaning parents and incapacitation in institutions for people with disabilities to working group participation in ministries. And the networkers will have no one rush them, as they put it themselves. Whoever, for him- or herself and in front of others, is capable of formulating rights clearly and understandably, sets an example for others. Remarkable, new, unusual.
